5 Complications of Slipping Dentures

They should fit snugly on top of your gum tissue, only relying on suction to stay in place. However, the shape of your mouth will change over time, which can cause your dentures to slip. Although it may seem like nothing more than an annoyance, here are 5 complications linked to poorly fitting dentures that you shouldn’t ignore.

1. Swollen and Painful Gums

Friction from your dentures moving around in your mouth can cause your gums to become inflamed. It can become painful to wear your dentures, which can affect your quality of life. Not to mention, chronic inflammation can damage healthy cells and tissues.

2. Sores and Infections

Friction or pressure points can cause sores on your gums or the inside of your lips and cheeks. Your mouth is home to hundreds of species of oral bacteria that can lead to infections. With your gums covering the sores, it can be almost impossible for them to heal if you continue to wear them.

3. Difficulty Speaking Clearly

If your dentures keep moving around in your mouth, speaking clearly can be challenging. You could have insecurities about your words sounding slurred or your teeth falling out when talking.

4. Trouble Eating

If your dentures don’t fit well, eating certain foods can be difficult due to a reduction in bite force. You may even eliminate them from your diet because they are too difficult to chew, which can lead to nutritional deficiencies.

5. Jaw Pain and Headaches

Poor-fitting dentures can affect your bite, which can result in jaw pain. You can develop a disorder of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). Inflammation and tension in the joints and facial muscles are linked to migraines and headaches.

Fixing Slipping Dentures

If you’re relying on an adhesive to keep your teeth in place, it’s time to contact your dentist for an appointment. They’ll create a personalized plan to stop slipping, which may include:

  • Relinement: Your jawbone shrinks after losing teeth. Your dentures should be relined regularly to accommodate the changes to your mouth. Your dentist can add or remove material to restore a comfortable fit.
  • Replacement: If your dentures are over 7 years old or the shape of your mouth has changed too much, you may need a replacement.
  • Dental Implants: If you’re interested in stopping slipping and irritation for good, you can add dental implants to your denture. 4 to 10 implant posts are surgically placed into your jaw to serve as new roots. Your bone will fuse to them through a process called osseointegration, creating unmatched support for your denture. You won’t have to worry about getting your dentures relined or replaced when investing in an implant-supported solution.

Maintaining your dentures with regular relining will help you get the most from your prosthetic. You’ll improve your quality of life and general wellness by ensuring your dentures fits correctly.
