Which Is Best: Porcelain or Composite Veneers?

The appearance of our smile plays a big role in how we feel about ourselves and having perfectly even, bright teeth has become the ideal. If you’re unhappy about flaws in your teeth, you’re not alone! Cosmetic dentists have helped millions of patients like you address aesthetic imperfections with dental veneers.

These thin, shell-like covers are bonded to the front of your pearly whites to address issues like minor gaps, slightly chipped or crooked teeth, and discoloration. There’s more than one type, though, and it’s important for patients to be informed. If you’re considering veneers, keep reading to learn about the two main types to decide which is best for you!

Type #1: Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are the most common type and are the more traditional of the two. They’re made of a resilient ceramic that’s custom-created to match the shape and shade of your natural teeth. They are so strong that they can last up to 30 years with the right care! That makes them an excellent long-term solution.

Some additional benefits of porcelain veneers are that they:

  • Resist discoloration. They are coated with a durable glaze that doesn’t stain easily.
  • Look natural. Porcelain has a similar translucent quality to the enamel of your natural pearly whites.
  • Protect your teeth. The chip-resistant material prevents your natural tooth from sustaining damage, too.

Type #2: Composite Veneers

Composite or bonded veneers have gained popularity as a more cost-effective alternative to the standard. They’re made of a malleable resin applied to your tooth’s front which your dentist sculpts to cover up any imperfections. It’s hardened into place using a high-intensity light and then polished to a more natural appearance.

While these veneers can also last decades with the right care, the material is more porous than porcelain and so tends to stain and chip more easily. That means you may need more frequent repairs or replacements than with the ceramic kind.

However, there are some specific advantages to composite veneers including:

  • Convenience. They are sculpted directly on your teeth in the dentist’s office instead of ordered from a lab. That means fewer trips and less of a wait!
  • Minimal preparation. With porcelain veneers, your dentist must irreversibly remove a layer of enamel no thicker than a contact lens from your tooth for it to line up correctly. It’s not necessary with bonded veneers

Which Type Of Veneers Are Right For Me?

Only you and your dentist can decide which type is best for your circumstances. You’ll need to factor in your budget as well as the condition of your teeth. After a thorough examination, your dentist will let you know their recommendation based on your specific needs.

Whichever route you take, you’ll soon have a newly perfected smile to show for it!
