Dental crowns are a popular solution to fortify and protect severely damaged teeth because they can last for decades if placed and cared for properly. After a few years with it in place, you might even find that over time you forget it’s there! That’s why it can be particularly important to recognize the signs that let you know when your dental crown needs to be replaced. Continue reading to learn 5 indicators that it’s time for a new crown.

#1- Your Gum Line Recedes

Though the porcelain of the dental crown doesn’t decay, bacteria are prone to gather around the gums, which can cause gum disease. If you notice your gum line receding, it could be a sign that the crown isn’t fitting properly and germs have begun to flourish.

#2- Your Bite Doesn’t Feel Right

If your cap is placed properly, you shouldn’t notice any different feelings or sensations when you chew. If something seems off-kilter or abnormal when you bite down, it could be that your crown needs to be replaced altogether.

#3- Your Notice Wear And Tear

Despite how durable they are, dental crowns can wear down over time. This is especially true for those who grind their teeth or don’t have healthy daily oral hygiene habits. After 5-10 years, they’re more likely to show signs of natural wear and tear. Keeping up with dental appointments twice a year allows your dentist to inspect it and ensure everything is still functioning as intended.

#4- It Doesn’t Look Good

Many patients with crowns have grown accustomed to how they appear. After all, they’ve effectively hidden an imperfect tooth for years at this point! If you notice a dark line along your tooth, it could be from metal in your crown showing through. This can be an indicator that it needs to be replaced.

#5- There’s Pain Or Swelling

If you notice pain or inflammation around a capped tooth, then it’s time to call your dentist! Even if it only happens at certain times like when you’re eating or drinking, this could indicate that the crown is too old or damaged to be doing its job properly. Broken or cracked dental crowns leave the underlying tooth exposed, which can lead to tenderness or swelling. In these cases, It’s imperative that your dentist replaces it as soon as possible to avoid additional injury to the already vulnerable tooth.

Even though dental crowns are incredibly durable, they are not completely impervious to harm. If you ever have any concerns about it between appointments, it can’t hurt to make an extra call to let your dentist know. With their help, you can ensure your dental crown offers protection for decades to come!
