Reasons Why Tooth Extractions Are Necessary

There are a number of reasons why we may determine that the removal of one or more teeth is necessary:

  • A tooth as spots of severe decay or damage that cannot be repaired with a filling or crown.
  • Advanced gum disease has loosened the teeth and made removal necessary.
  • Teeth are impacted (stuck beneath the gumline) and negatively affecting nearby tissues.
  • The teeth are overcrowded, and extractions are necessary to make room for orthodontia.
  • There is a severe infection, and an extraction can prevent it from spreading into nearby tissues.
  • A child’s baby tooth has not fallen out on its own, and removing it will support the health of incoming adult teeth.

The Process of Removing a Tooth

The process of tooth extraction begins when we administer a local anesthetic to numb the area surrounding the tooth. If you are particularly nervous, have sensitive oral tissues, or require the removal of multiple teeth, sedation may be provided to keep you relaxed throughout your procedure. Once you are comfortable, your dentist will carefully lift the tooth using a tool called an elevator. Once the tooth is loosened, forceps will be used to gently pull it from its socket. To finish, we clean the area and place gauze to control any bleeding.

In complex cases, such as if you have impacted wisdom teeth, we might refer you to a specialist for surgical tooth removal.

Here are some steps you can take to facilitate a smooth recovery after your extraction procedure:

  • Avoid rinsing, spitting, or using a straw for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot at your extraction site.
  • Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling and discomfort during the initial 24 hours.
  • Take prescribed or over-the-counter pain medications as directed by your dentist.
  • Stick to soft foods such as mashed potatoes, yogurt, and soup for the first few days.
  • Maintain oral hygiene by brushing gently around the extraction site and using saltwater rinses after 24 hours.
  • Refrain from smoking or consuming alcohol because these can delay healing.
  • Keep your head elevated when you sleep.
  • Monitor the site for signs of infection, such as excessive swelling or pus, and contact your dentist if necessary.

You should also be certain to attend any recommended follow-up appointments. Remember, you should replace your lost tooth in order to avoid future complications, such as dental drift and additional tooth loss.
