The Fine Print: What Nobody Tells You Before Getting Invisalign

Woman pondering her Invisalign treatment

Invisalign has a well-earned reputation for being one of the most convenient ways to straighten your teeth. There are no metal wires, no brackets, and no food restrictions to get in your way. But while it really is a fantastic treatment, there are a few details worth knowing before you commit. The more you know about the treatment, the more prepared you’ll be when you finally take the plunge. Continue reading to explore the finer details of Invisalign.

You Have to Wear Them for Most of the Day, Every Day

Your aligners need to be worn 20 to 22 hours every day to keep your treatment on track. That means they’re only coming out when you eat, drink anything other than plain water, and brush and floss. While it may sound difficult, it’s actually very manageable once you get the hang of it.

You’ll Need to Strategize About Meal Times

You can’t eat or drink while wearing your aligners. Chewing with them in your mouth can warp or crack them, and many popular beverages like coffee, tea, and red wine can stain them. That means every meal and snack needs to be accounted for in your routine. You’ll also need to brush or rinse your mouth before putting them back in after meals.

You Have to Clean Them Every Day

Keeping your aligners clean doesn’t require a long list of special products, but they do need attention every day. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush, cool water, and a mild, clear dish soap to gently scrub away stains, food particles, and bacteria. Otherwise, your aligners may trap everything against your teeth, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

Not Every Case Qualifies

Invisalign is versatile, but it’s not for everyone. Mild to moderate crowding, gaps, and bite issues are well within its range. However, severe misalignment, active gum disease, or significant tooth decay can complicate your case, or even make you ineligible until your condition is stable.

You’ll Need a Retainer After

Many patients don’t know this, but treatment doesn’t end when you finish your last tray. You’ll need to wear a retainer for the same amount of time each day to keep your teeth from shifting back. That said, the time you need to wear it will gradually decrease over time as long as you’re consistent.

If you’ve been considering Invisalign, the best first step is a consultation. Your dentist can take a look at your smile, walk you through the process, and let you know if you’re a candidate. Now that you know what’s in the fine print, you can move forward with confidence.
