6 Tips for Sleeping Through a Nighttime Toothache

Few things are more frustrating than a throbbing toothache that hits just as you’re trying to fall asleep. Tooth pain always seems to feel worse at night – when you’re tired, everything is quiet, and you can’t distract yourself from the discomfort. While a nighttime toothache is often a sign you need to see a dentist, there are a few things you can do in the meantime to find relief and finally get some rest. Here are some practical tips to help you sleep through a nighttime toothache and wake up feeling a bit better.

Keep Your Head Elevated

When you lie flat, blood can pool in your head, which may increase pressure and worsen the throbbing sensation. To reduce this pressure and help ease the pain, prop your head up with an extra pillow or two. Sleeping in a slightly upright position can prevent blood flow from intensifying the ache and may allow you to fall asleep more easily.

Rinse with Warm Saltwater

Before bed, try a warm saltwater rinse. Mix about half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting it out. Saltwater acts as a natural disinfectant and can help reduce inflammation, clear away debris, and soothe irritated tissues. This quick remedy might ease the pain just enough to let you drift off.

Apply a Cold Compress

If your toothache is accompanied by swelling or feels especially sharp, a cold compress on the outside of your cheek can help numb the area. Wrap a few ice cubes in a towel and apply it for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. Cold therapy constricts blood vessels, which helps reduce inflammation and dull the pain signals sent to your brain.

Use Over-the-Counter Pain Relief

Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can provide temporary relief for tooth pain. Ibuprofen is especially effective if swelling is involved because it also reduces inflammation. Just be sure to follow dosage instructions carefully and avoid aspirin if you have any bleeding issues or are caring for a child.

Avoid Trigger Foods and Drinks Before Bed

Spicy, sugary, hot, or cold foods can make a toothache worse. Stick to bland, soft foods before bedtime, and avoid sugary snacks or acidic drinks that could aggravate a sensitive tooth. Also, steer clear of very cold water or desserts like ice cream, which might seem soothing at first but can cause a sudden spike in pain.

Try a Numbing Gel or Clove Oil

Dental gels with benzocaine can numb the gums temporarily and are available over the counter. Alternatively, clove oil is a natural remedy known for its numbing properties. Dab a small amount on a cotton swab and gently apply it to the sore area. It may provide just enough relief to help you relax into sleep.

While these tips can help you get through the night, a persistent toothache is a sign of an underlying dental issue such as a cavity, infection, or cracked tooth.
