Sports Dentistry
While attending Phillipsburg High School and the University of Notre Dame, Dr. Jeffrey
DeMartino was on the wrestling and boxing team. This
perhaps explains why he is a huge advocate of sports dentistry. In 1996,
he designed
a mouthpiece called the "Bengal Bite", named after the Bengal
Bouts, a boxing tournament at the University of Notre Dame. Dr. DeMartino
donates a portion of the proceeds he earns from this mouthpiece
to this tournament
every year.

Many professional boxers swear by the Bengal Bite mouthpiece, including world champion Lennox Lewis, and former world champions Larry Holmes and Tommy Hearns. It is a special design stabilizing the upper and lower jaw to prevent concussion and fractures in the TMJ area. It also creates an airway so the boxer can keep his or her teeth together and still breathe through the mouth. In boxing, like in other sports, when players gets winded they tend to breathe through the mouth, but if they get hit in the jaw while the mouth is open, they are more likely to receive a fracture of the condyle in the TMJ area.
- Mouthguards - We provide many mouth guards for sports teams in the area, including the Eagles, local high schools and Lehigh Lafayette College
